I've never looked better

As someone with oily skin who only ever used liquid foundation, this has been a real eye opener. Paired with the right primer (I use Loreal Studio Secrets primer) this can last easily through a whole work day and my skin looks flawless. I put it on to a medium coverage and I've used this 5-6 days a week formonths and months on I'm only half way through so you get plenty of wear from the product.

Pair it with a good primer and finish with a setting spray. If wanting a full cover, spritz skin between layers

Excellent coverage

I always wondered why pay $50 for a product when you can get something similar for $10. This product has answered my question. It provides impeccable coverage and looks fantastic in pictures. Coverage is buildable so that you can achieve the desired look. It comes in a compact and has a separate compartment for the applicator. The sponge it comes with is soft and easy to use. I recommend this product all round. It is something I will continue to repurchase.

Doesn't live up to the hype but still a good product

I had incredibly high hopes for this after seeing my friend using it. She always looks so matte, poreless and flawless and also confirmed it was great with oil control that I went out and bought it. Well, I hate to break it to y'all but it is not the best at oil control at all. I wore it alone and oil broke through faster than it usually would. I have yet to try it with maybe a primer rather than my daytime routine (which has an SPF under the foundation) so this could make a difference

Over foundation, it provides a notch more coverage and is a bit better at oil control but that could also be down to the liquid foundation I have layered it over. The pigment is definitely there and great for touch ups with a concealer brush. I frequently do this when I need a bit more coverage over a blemish or around the nose!

Perfect for on the go. The sponge it comes with provides quite a high, very matte/flat coverage so perhaps bring your own brush to apply.
I would say normal to combination if you are after marginal oil control but I think alot of skin types can get some benefit from the product!

MAGIC

Just like the studio fix liquid foundation, it is amazing.
This product makes your skin super matte and also soft, it doesnt make your face cakey or anything like that.
It is definitely worth the money. It gives me such a nice and even finished look. However it does make your face a bit flat, so contouring or at least blush and highlight is a must.
The amazing thing about this product is, that it literally never finishes, i only go through one of these every year, and i use foundation every single day. I cant believe how long these stuff last.
Definitely recommend

Perfect for on the go

This product has helped me cover up so much severe acne in my life that I may be a little bias. When applied with the sponge from the compact it has such a high level of coverage that on good days I could get away with just the powder. The lightest colour looks okay on my skin and doesn't make me orange. I still love this product to set liquid and cream foundations for a perfect finish. You will definitely need to apply some blush or highlight as this product will give you a flat face. The packaging is perfect to pop in your bag and the mirror is super handy for touch ups.

Matte ( but a bit flat)

This is my first MAC foundation/powder and I was really excited to try it out. I have to say I like this product and I can see where these hyping girls are coming from but I am not that much impressed.
I like the black and sturdy packaging with the mirror ( fuss free touch up during the day) and a sponge applicator included. I am impressed by the shade range, I was matched to NC 30, it is a good one for summer but I believe I should be NC 25. Shouldn't have trusted the lady there.
The formula is silky smooth, so finely milled it feels creamy. When applied with the sponge as foundation it gives medium coverage, but in my opinion it accentuates big pores and skin texture. It gives a very matte finish, and unfortunately it is a flat matte.
When used as a setting powder it adds a bit of coverage, gives matte finish and prolongs the longevity of the foundation.
The powder/foundation is long lasting. I use it mainly to set up my make up, on its own it makes my face look a bit too dull. You could always pair it with some highlighter or luminous finishing powder for a more natural effect.
It will be great for a big night out as I am sure artificial lights will make it look beautiful. A bit too full on in the daylight.

Use a big fluffy brush if you only want to set your foundation with it. Use a sponge if you want to use it as foundation for better coverage.
I think this powder is perfect for those with combination and oily skin. I can't imagine a person with very dry skin using this product.

It's amazing

I've been using this every since February and I love it! It's covers my red checks and it comes in heaps over shades so it was easy to get a colour to match me as I'm so pale. Did i mention the coverage is amazing?!

good coverage and easy to use

This is a holy grail product! the price is afforable & reasonable, can be found at stores like david jones, myer, sephora or mecca maxima. i love this powder because its easy to use and buildable. it comes in a few shades to choose from & can be used to touch up areas throughout the day. it can be used to set the makeup or foundation (any liquid to creamy foundation) or even to set areas where you get oilyness and shinyness. my skin being combo i used this everday and never did my skin have any shiny or feel greasy. my all time fav product ! it also matifys your makeup which is good.

use with a fluffy brush or a cotton pad to apply product to skin

Long Lasting

This foundation would be light coverage if used on its own but I use it on top of my mac studio fix concealer (I know some prefer to put on concealer after foundation) in order to get a full coverage. My face will usually be very shiny after a few hours with any foundation and this powder isn't really any different (hence why I took a star off).

Despite this, no matter how shiny I get, this foundation does stay in place for a really long time with primer and concealer underneath.

It doesn't irritate my skin and feels really light and natural.

Long wearing and matte

This powder is awesome it stays on all day and gives the face a matte and flawless face. I don't really use liquid foundations as I find they don't really blend well into this skin. So this is the only powder I reach for. I have been using this for years it's the only powder foundation I use.

doesn't live up the hype

I had really high hopes for this product but have not been overly impressed. I find it doesn't sit super well on my skin, especially on top of foundation or BB cream. It has a tendency to travel more than my other, cheaper powders and It doesn't add as much of a mattifying finish as i would like. I would 100% recommend the Australis Fresh and Flawless powder over this as It works way better to seal and finish your makeup. this product does however, have a better shade range than Australis.

HG powder

MAC Studio Fix + is my failsafe, all time favourite foundation. I am just about to purchase my third one. It fares extremely well in hot humid climate to keep my face flawless and matte.

It is a thick powder, a heavy duty one. The key is to use it light handedly and blend till you get the coverage and finish you want. I use it on top of my liquid foundation, to set it and give that extra bit of coverage that I need. I use ELF kabuki brush to blend it. The finish is flawless, matte and kind of gives a velvetty feel to the skin. The staying power is amazing. I get a full working day coverage with it and need not even top up.

The packaging is handbag friendly with a huge mirror and a sponge applicator. I don't use the spong applicator, I use a kabuki brush instead. The top of the powder doesn't crust or cake. The quality of the product is really good

The only downside is the coverage (which is also the upside!) if used with a heavy hand it can look like too much. It can look too powdery if not blended. It can also settle into the fine lines. The key is to blend it and a good finishing spray will give a fresh look and take away the powderiness. Once you work out the right way to use it, you'll never look back!

Great Product

Overall, this product is very effective.
I find the shade range absolutely brilliant, as I struggle to find lightly coloured foundations with a yellow undertone (NC20), and this matches me perfectly.
As it is pressed, the powder is user friendly, and not messy like a loose powder would be.
I find that it works well both on its own, and over light foundations to boost the coverage and set the liquid in place for a number of hours.
I have dry combination skin, which means I have dry patches as well as an oily t-zone. This works great for oily skin, as it does stay matte for a good amount of time. I wouldn't recommend it for dry skin however, as it does cling to dry patches a little. But I do find that if I exfoliate and heavily moisturise beforehand, it isn't as bad.

-Be sure to exfoliate and moisturise if you have dry skin

Pure magic

The first time I used this I literally thought it was magic. It creates the appearance of absolutely flawless skin. It comes with an applicator which it what gave me this first impression but now I use it with a powder brush instead with a BB cream underneath for a lighter application. I have very dry skin so I think applying it in this way achieves better results as even though it is amazing for hiding pimples and other redness etc it can exacerbate the appearance of dry skin. MAC also has an incredible range of shades so it's easy to match your skin perfectly.

Use with a powder brush for lighter coverage. Use over a moisturising BB cream if you have dry skin.

Truly matte powder

This was the first MAC product I ever bought, after a friend recommended it. It's an excellent powder with a pure, matte finish that helps keep oiliness at bay.

The fact that it's a pressed powder is wonderful, because I don't have to worry about spilling it all through my bag. The package stays clamped shut, so even if you have a few loose or broken pieces from dropping it, you won't find spillage.

Despite the fact that it comes with a powder puff in a little compartment, I like to use a kabuki brush to apply it -- but that's just personal preference. Using a brush gives a sheerer coverage than the powder puff.

The colour and coverage are great and there's no noticeable perfume or overly 'powdery' smell, which is always a bonus in my books.

Love this powder

I have repurchased this product many times now and use it almost daily. I love the full coverage and matte finish that it provides with such a small amount of product which makes the powder last for a very long time. I like applying it with the sponge pad provided for a thick full look, or a brush for a light more natural look. Great product, will continue to use.

full coverage with a small amount of product

i use the studio fix powder over the top of my mac studio fix fluid foundation - especially on days where my skin needs the extra coverage over my acne or redness. i love this powder as you dont need to use alot of it at any given time.

i have dry skin, so when i am having a particularly dry skin day i tend not to wear this unless i decide on a bb cream underneath because it can highlight my dry spots. this being said, its one of my must haves and it lasts for quite a while.

pretty much everybody! it comes in so many different shades, its hard not to find a colour match.

HOLY GRAIL POWDER

This stuff is incredible! I use a small amount on my nose and chin as my foundation tends to wear off quite easily on those areas, and then a light dusting over the rest of my face, and it lasts all day! This does add a touch of coverage to the areas I apply it too, but unless you're heavy handed, this will not cake whatsoever. So in love, I'll always repurchase and carry with me wherever I go!

Apply lightly with a tapered brush to really get the areas that you feel need the coverage!
All skin types! Oily/combination may need to apply more often.

When I was a makeup noob and had just discovered the wonders of beauty blogs, I saw that many foundation reviews and mentions had the initials NC and NW followed by a number. I didn’t understand what they were so I did a quick online search, and that was how I first learned about the MAC foundation shade coding system!

Skin

If you’ve ever tried to shop for foundation, you’d know how hard it can be to find a product that matches perfectly with your skin tone. Shade names like Caramel and Golden Beige aren’t helpful either as they often look different from brand to brand, or even with different products of the same brand. The MAC foundation system makes finding your exact match a lot easier because it’s developed to match varying degrees of skin tones as well as differences in undertone. Basically, if there’s one makeup brand that you’re absolutely certain to get a match of your skin, it would be MAC! To find out more about why their system works so well (and to help me find my MAC shade), I talked to MAC events artist Ryan Wong and MAC product specialist and makeup artist Beny Reginaldo about the products that set their brand apart from the rest.

What is the difference between NC and NW? Which one is right for me?

“At MAC Philippines, foundations and concealers are mostly categorized into NC and NW. NC stands for Neutral-Cool and has yellow undertone, while NW is Neutral-Warm which has pink undertone,” Ryan explains. “An easy way to determine if you are yellow or pink toned is to see whether your skin has a rosy or golden tone. If your skin is naturally rosy, then your skin has a pink undertone. Likewise, if your skin has a naturally golden tone, then your skin has yellow undertone.”

If you’re still not sure which group you fall under, a MAC specialist will help you out. Beny tells me that part of a MAC artist’s training includes being able to quickly figure out what a person’s skin tone is, just from one look! Even though I was experiencing some redness and looked flushed from my commute, he immediately pinpointed me as having an NC shade.

Which shades are the most common or popular among Filipinos?

Locally, the most popularly worn MAC shades are NC30 to NC40. Beny explains that most Asians have NC undertones because of our warm coloring, and that in countries like Thailand, the people are so yellow-toned that MAC had to create a purely C line for them! There are about 20 shades (including NW options) available in the PH to suit most Pinoy skin tones, but the actual number of all available MAC foundation shades is past 30. Aside from the C shades, there are pure N and pure W shades, too. That’s why beauty gurus and lovers alike usually reference MAC shades when describing foundations and skin tones.

Editor's note: These are swatched on NC35 skin. I use NC35 comfortably, NC30 is too light on me when blended. - Liz

What formulations are available? Which one is right for me?

You know what’s harder than finding your shade match? Choosing the right formula to get! MAC has so many liquid, powder, and gel foundations that I felt a bit intimidated. I counted about 11 different formulas in the store! Ryan explains that MAC has so many product options because they’re dedicated to making sure that foundation looks like real skin.So here’s a tip to keep you from getting confused: just match the formula to your skin type! If you have combination to oily skin, the non-hassle option would be to get a powder formulation while those with dry skin might want to get a liquid formulation.

MAC doesn’t limit the options there though. If you’re oily-skinned but prefer a liquid foundation, you can go for Studio Fix Fluid (P1,900) and just set it with a finishing powder like Mineralize Skinfinish Natural (P1,800). If you have dry skin and want to keep things matte, Studio Fix Sculpt Foundation (P2,150) is a gel-type formula that dries to a powder finish. To cop the Korean dewy skin trend, get the new Studio Waterweight Foundation (P2,200),which is designed to work for any skin type. For heavy coverage, try the Pro Longwear Foundation (P2,150) or Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation (P2,200).

How does a foundation-matching happen in a MAC store?

It all starts with the MAC makeup artist getting to know your skin. They usually ask about your skin type, how much coverage you want or feel comfortable wearing, the kind of formulation you want to try, and the type of finish you prefer. Based on your answers, the artist can recommend the product that they think will suit you best but you can also request to try any product that strikes your fancy.

When you’ve decided on a product to try, the artist will get three shades of your preferred formulation: one that looks closest to your skin tone, a shade that’s a step darker, and a shade that’s a step lighter. In my case, Beny figured that my skin looked closest to NC37, so he got NC35 and NC40 (there was no NC39 for the particular foundation I chose) to compare.

All three shades are swatched on your jaw line to see how they blend with the color of your (bare) face and that of your neck. This is very important because the two can actually have different skin tones! If your neck is much darker than your face, the artist will find a shade that lies between the two so that it blends more seamlessly. It’s never a good idea to base your foundation matching on swatches made on your hand or arm! Unless you’re lucky enough to have a completely even skin tone all over your body, chances are they’ll end up looking quite different when applied to your face.

After giving the swatches a minute or two to settle on my skin, Beny’s first pick proved to be my exact match. To be absolutely sure that it was right for me and so I could see how it would look when worn, he applied NC37 all over my face with a stippling brush.

Should my concealer be the same as my foundation shade?

It depends on what you’re trying to conceal. Ryan says that because concealers are used to cancel discolorations like dark circles and pimple marks, you have to use a concealer shade that will make the area blend better with the rest of your skin.

Beny used the Studio Finish Concealer Duo (P1100~) to cover up the remaining imperfections. He neutralized the bluish tones of my under eye area with an NW30 cream concealer that was lighter and pinker than my skin to give it a brightening effect. For my acne, he applied a slightly lighter NC35 concealer because the marks looked dark.

After my MAC shade matching session with artist Beny Reginaldo

It was really fun finding out my MAC foundation shade, and the experience is just worlds away from going to a department store stall and having to figure out what shade would suit me amid poorly-managed testers and unflattering store lights. The MAC store had well-lit mirrors, clean brushes, and a knowledgeable professional to help me out! You can also find out what your MAC shade is simply by going to any of their stores and requesting for a free consultation. If you want to get actual makeup lessons though, they offer paid classes wherein the fee is consumable with MAC products. Sounds like a great deal!
